Van Dijk, one of the main architects of Liverpool's sixth title in the top continental competition and access to the final of the League of Nations of the Dutch national team, surpassed in the final election the Argentine Leo Messi and the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, the other two finalists to achieve this award.
Messi was the top scorer of the Champions League (12 goals) and champion of the Spanish League, in which he won his tenth title with Barcelona with 36 goals; and Cristiano was the top scorer of the final phase of the League of Nations in which he was champion with his team and achieved his first league title in Italy with Juventus.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the player who has received this award more times, three times (2014, 2016 and 2017), one more than Messi, twice (2011 and 2015).
Van Dijk is the first defender to receive this award, in whose record he relieves Croatian Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, who last year surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo and Egyptian Mohamed Salah, also of Liverpool.
The three finalists were selected by a jury composed of 80 coaches from the clubs participating in the Champions League and the Europa League, along with 55 journalists from each of the UEFA member federations selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) group.
Each of them chose a list of three players and had to assign each one a score of five, three and one. The coaches could not vote for players of their own team.

Virgil van Dijk also received on Thursday the UEFA award for best defense of the last Champions League.
Van Dijk, born in Breda on July 8, 1991, shone with his own light in the achievement of Liverpool's sixth title in the top continental competition, winning in the final to Tottenham in the Wanda Metropolitano de Madrid.
Former player of teams like Willem II, Groningen, Celtic and Southampton, he has surpassed his compatriot Matthijs de Ligt in the final election (last year at Ajax and now at Juventus) and his teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The following defenses in the election were Andy Robertson (Liverpool), Gerard Piqué (Barcelona), Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham), Kalidou Koulibaly and Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid).
The latter relieves precisely in the prize list, since the Spanish defender won it in the previous two seasons, and is the first Dutchman to get it from Jaap Stam (Manchester United, 1998-99 and 1999-00).
