During a chaotic Friday night episode of WWE SmackDown, Sami Zayn violently derailed the main event triple threat match to determine a new number one contender for CM Punk’s WWE Championship, according to reports from multiple outlets. The chaotic sequence culminated with Zayn laying out Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Gunther, and champion CM Punk with the title belt to stand tall over his fallen rivals.
The Triple Threat Match Breakdown on WWE SmackDown
The main event featured a high-stakes triple threat match between Gunther, Kevin Owens, and Finn Balor, booked after Kevin Owens demanded another title shot at the start of the broadcast, according to F4WOnline. Editor Bryan Rose noted that Owens initially stated he would handle Zayn on his own time before Gunther and Finn Balor interjected to set up the contendership bout.

Action inside the squared circle escalated quickly during the closing stretch. Balor climbed to the top rope looking for the Coup de Grace, but Gunther rolled out of the way. Owens followed up by delivering a cannonball to Gunther in the corner, only to eat a Slingblade from Balor. When Balor returned to the top rope, Owens met him for a superplex attempt. Gunther intervened by pulling both men down, dropping Owens with a lariat, and chopping Balor off the ropes. Gunther then cinched in a rear choke on Owens, which Balor broke up by landing a Coup de Grace.
Balor dropkicked Gunther into the corner, connected with another Coup de Grace, and went for the winning cover. That is when Sami Zayn made his explosive presence felt.
Sami Zayn’s Interference and the Chaos That Followed
Irate over being omitted from the title picture following previous weeks of friction, Zayn sprinted down the ramp and yanked Balor out of the ring, as detailed by F4WOnline. Zayn then tossed Balor over the announcer’s desk and dropped the first referee. Owens capitalized by hitting a stunner on Gunther inside the ring, but with no official to count the pin, Zayn took out a second referee running down the ramp.

At that point, current WWE Undisputed Champion CM Punk rushed out to seek retribution for last week’s attacks. Sportskeeda reported that Punk wanted revenge after Zayn interfered in his title match against Owens last Friday, where Zayn initially tried to help Owens cheat before attacking Owens and Punk when the Prizefighter refused.
Punk chased Zayn into the ring, which triggered a direct brawl between Punk and Owens. Taking advantage of the distraction, Zayn grabbed Punk’s WWE Championship belt. He dropped Owens, Balor, Gunther, and finally Punk with heavy belt strikes. The broadcast closed with Zayn standing tall over all four competitors.
The Road Ahead for the WWE Undisputed Championship
According to Sportskeeda, subsequent reports indicate that CM Punk called out Sami Zayn during a pre-taped episode, setting up a scheduled WWE Undisputed Title match between the two for the September 11th episode of SmackDown.
