A 12-year-old double amputee patient at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) has received a pioneering synthetic skin treatment called NovoSorb MTX, making him only the second person in the UK to undergo the procedure. Developed by PolyNovo, the biodegradable wound dressing acts as a scaffold to help the body grow new tissue and rebuild the dermis layer more quickly, transforming the young patient’s daily mobility and quality of life.
How NovoSorb MTX Rebuilds Dermis for Young Amputees
When Taylor was just eight months old, he fell critically ill with meningococcal septicemia, an infection that caused his body to shut down in order to protect vital organs, according to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). Clinical Nurse Specialist Anna Baker, who first met Taylor in intensive care during those early days, noted that consultants described him at the time as the sickest patient they had ever cared for. Because his extremities were affected first, he lost several fingers and had both legs amputated before his first birthday.
As Taylor grew older, he learned to use prosthetic legs, but the skin on his residual limbs failed to keep pace with his growth. This mismatch triggered repeated hospital visits and increased his reliance on a wheelchair. Reflecting on that period, Taylor shared: It wasn’t the best watching other people running around. It got me down because I wished I could join in.
His mother, Terri, added: Taylor’s quality of life had really declined until he had the MTX treatment last year. It was the best decision we have made.
Regulatory Approval and Surgical Innovation at Nottingham University Hospitals
To address Taylor’s deteriorating limb tissue, NUH Consultant Burns, Plastics and Reconstructive Surgeon Mr. Skaria Alexander sought approval from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to use NovoSorb MTX, a product not yet licensed for routine use in the UK. The biodegradable synthetic wound dressing was utilized alongside Biodegradable Temporising Matrix (BTM) to establish a thicker layer of new tissue.
Explaining the physiological mechanism behind the procedure, Mr. Skaria Alexander stated: Dermis is the lower layer of the skin that gives structural support in terms of durability and elasticity. The usefulness of MTX is to build up that dermis layer in a quicker way with fewer procedures, reducing stress to the patients, reducing theatre costs and reducing nursing time.
He further noted: To my knowledge, Taylor’s case represents one of the most successful outcomes seen with MTX to date. We hope that by introducing MTX for suitable patients in the future, we can reduce the number of surgical procedures needed to rebuild the dermis.
Restoring Daily Mobility and Pursuing Paralympic Dreams
Following the procedure, the medical technology company that developed the product recently visited the clinic room at Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) to see Taylor’s recovery firsthand. Nurse Anna Baker observed that the intervention has fundamentally altered the patient’s routine: It has been life changing. We barely see him in clinic now.
She added: He can use his prosthetics more, he’s not missing school and he can take part in the activities he loves instead of sitting in his wheelchair watching others.

Today, Taylor spends time with friends, plays football with his grandad, and has joined a competitive table tennis league. Terri confirmed the lasting success of the procedure, stating: We’ve now had a full year with no issues. Taylor is happy and able to get on with what he wants to do again.
Looking ahead, Taylor is actively training with the aspiration of competing at the Paralympic Games. Reflecting on his unique medical milestone, Taylor said: It’s great to feel special being the second person in the UK to use MTX, and even more special to be the first patient in the world to talk about it.
