Flight FR5883, which was making its way toward the Mediterranean, had to completely rethink its route after airborne wildlife abruptly intervened during the initial climb.

Operated by a Malta Air-registered Boeing 737 MAX 8 bearing the registration 9H-VUV, the jet was originally charted for a non-stop journey to Malta International Airport in Luqa (MLA).

However, plans changed almost instantly. As noted by an AIRLIVE informant, the flight crew stopped ascending at 7,000 feet right after hitting a bird during departure.

Squawking 7700 and Coordinating Priority Handling

As the situation onboard demanded undivided attention, the flight crew took standard precautionary steps to alert regional air traffic controllers. About half an hour into the journey, the pilots keyed in squawk code 7700—the universal aviation transponder signal denoting a general emergency—to notify air traffic personnel about the onboard predicament.

While circling at altitude, the aircraft remained at 7,000 feet, burning off fuel while the crew worked through onboard safety checklists. Air traffic control actively coordinated priority handling for the flight to ensure a smooth transition back to terra firma.

Diversion and Safe Touchdown at East Midlands Airport

Operational updates quickly shifted the destination as the severity of the engine issue became clear. At 09:08 BST, tracking data confirmed that the flight was diverting. By 09:09 BST, the aircraft was holding at 6,000 feet and heading to Nottingham East Midlands Airport, shifting its trajectory to the west by 09:14 BST.

The diversion concluded without further incident when the Boeing 737 touched down safely on runway 27 at EMA at 09:58 BST. Just one minute later, at 09:59 BST, the aircraft successfully vacated the runway, bringing the airborne emergency to a controlled close.
