Flight operations at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport were suspended overnight after a “modified drone” was sighted and later found next to a Ukrainian Antonov Airlines An-124 transport aircraft. Saxony police confirmed that the device was spotted in the cargo operation area overnight. According to police sources speaking to Süddeutsche Zeitung, the modified drone contained an unknown substance
and a detonator.
Security Incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport Triggers Flight Suspensions
The discovery forced immediate emergency measures at the aviation hub. As part of the police response, a robot was deployed and a controlled explosion was carried out at the site. The Leipzig Police Directorate stated that a security-related incident occurred at Leipzig/Halle Airport on Wednesday night,
leading directly to the suspension of flight operations across the facility.
Airfield Operations and Mid-Air Collisions Reported
The security scare extended beyond the ground discovery. Officers reported that a second unidentified flying object collided with a cargo plane after it had taken off from the airport. That aircraft was diverted to Hanover, where minor damage was detected following the airborne impact. German outlet Bild reported that four Ukrainian cargo aircraft were present at the facility during the suspected attack.

Following the initial detection of the drone, flights were suspended at the airport. Authorities subsequently cleared one runway for use, while the airport’s second runway was not scheduled for use on Wednesday. German police have not yet identified those responsible for the incident, and efforts to identify the drone’s pilot remain ongoing.
Broader Context of European Airport Disruptions
Leipzig/Halle Airport has served as a logistics base for Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines since shortly after the launch of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Security officials noted that suspected Russian-linked drone incidents have repeatedly disrupted airports across Europe, causing recurring flight suspensions and diversions. Police investigations continue as authorities work to determine the origin of the explosive device and the parties responsible for the airfield intrusion.
