In the middle of the month, Volkswagen introduced an unusual novelty – a serial convertible based on the compact T-Roc crossover. And what could be the Russian analogue of such a car?
The niche of cross-convertibles in modern automotive industry is very narrow. First of all, I recall the second-generation Nissan Murano, introduced in 2008, and in 2011 received an open version. In the new generation of the 2014 model, they decided not to release the roofless version, since CrossCabliolet sales were low. A more recent example is the Range Rover Evoque Convertible, which has been produced since 2016 on the basis of the previous generation model. By the way, until recently, this model could be bought in our country, and the new generation of the crossover remained only in the five-door version. It is not surprising that these cross-convertibles were not in great demand, and one of the main factors was a significantly higher price compared to basic SUVs. In the near future, a convertible based on a more budgetary crossover – Volkswagen T-Roc will try to attract customers. Sales of the five-door crossover are already going very well: for example, more than 111 thousand copies were sold in the first half of 2019, and the company plans to sell about 20 thousand cross-convertibles annually.
A similar version based on the Lada XRAY Cross (by the way, we recently tested the crossover in the new version with a CVT) would, of course, be even cheaper, and such a car could become the brightest model of the company. The cross-cabriolet has two doors, while the wheelbase remains the same, so that the interior space is not much affected. The roof is made soft, as it is cheaper and takes up less space when folded compared to a rigid one. On the trunk lid there is a spoiler with an additional brake light.
If we talk about motors, then for such an image model you need the most powerful engine option available. Today, the 1.8 engine developing 122 hp is the XRAY Cross model. and providing acceleration to "hundreds" in 10.9 seconds (according to the claimed characteristics). Or you can borrow an engine of the same volume from Vesta Sport, but developing already 145 “horses”, which allows the sedan to accelerate to 100 km / h in 9.6 seconds.
Today, the most affordable Lada XRAY Cross with the aforementioned 1.8 engine and “mechanics” is estimated at 759,900 rubles. The basic version with a 113-horsepower 1.6 and a CVT will cost much more – 846,900 rubles. All modifications are equipped with front-wheel drive.
By the way, we recently published a large article devoted to another domestic convertible made on the basis of the VAZ-2108 and known to many as Lada Natasha.
