Inside Playground Games’ 10-Year Quest to Revive Fable RPG

Playground Games is developing Fable, an upcoming open-world action role-playing game for Xbox, bridging its history as the studio behind the racing franchise Forza Horizon with the revival of Lionhead Studios’ beloved British fantasy series. Originally established in 2010 inside an unassuming white building in Leamington Spa to challenge Gran Turismo with Forza Horizon, the developer expanded its ambitions following the 2016 closure of Lionhead by Microsoft.

The Evolution from Forza Horizon to Fable

Transitioning from high-speed racing simulations to a complex narrative-driven fantasy required a massive recruitment effort, forcing the studio to merge its talented torque-heads with developers well-versed in Tolkien lore. According to co-founder and game director Ralph Fulton, assembling a fresh workforce from scratch stands as the most challenging undertaking in the video game industry. “Building a team from scratch is the hardest thing you can do in video games,” Fulton states. “You can hire the people with the best CVs, but if they don’t gel, six to nine months later you’re back in the market. The human cost meant bringing hundreds of people from all over the world, many of whom relocated solely because they were fans of Fable.”

While driving games rarely command the same critical reverence as blockbuster narrative adventures, taking on an action RPG offered a chance to demonstrate the studio’s broader capabilities. “I think there was a little bit of pride in proving we could cut it in a different genre,” Fulton explains. “It made sense not to fall too far from Horizon.”

Tactile Combat and British Comedy Talent in Albion

At the Gamescom expo in Cologne, Germany, hands-on demonstrations within a wraith-ridden mine reveal combat mechanics that immediately dispel doubts about the studio’s action credentials. Encounters feature skeletal knights that shatter into bone splinters under the heavy crunch of a hammer or the crisp thwick of a bowstring, while swamp-dwelling foes can be transformed into squawking roosters during chaotic magical skirmishes in Wraithmarsh. This action is paired with sharp, irreverent writing that rejects traditional genre cliches in favor of a contemporary British tone.

“We were a bit bored of traditional fantasy cliches and the way characters usually speak in those settings,” Fulton notes. “I love media, particularly in period settings, that use a modern tone of voice, idiom, and phrasing … I don’t think we could have gotten Matt King to play a cliched fantasy character.” King stars as the retired former greatest Hero of Albion, Humphry, guiding players alongside a cast of notable British comedians including Richard Ayoade and Natasia Demetriou. The voice actors brought considerable creative improvisation to their roles, with Fulton remarking, “Richard Ayoade virtually improvised a new script for his scenes on the spot.”

Player Choice, Narrative Stakes, and Industry Significance

Beneath the satire and sorcery, the core of the experience remains rooted in meaningful player choice and a low-stakes main quest that encourages open exploration until its climatic conclusion. Rejecting industry trends that sideline final acts due to low completion metrics, the team invested heavily in an impactful ending. “Most importantly, we stick the landing,” Fulton emphasizes. “It’s easy to look at industry metrics saying 100% of people start a game and only 25% finish, and decide not to invest heavily in the finale. But we relentlessly pursued quality here. In great Fable fashion, it culminates in a choice that really challenges you to think about who you are, with a real personal cost to weigh against the outcome.”

Navigating production through a disastrous industry pivot to live-service games, a global pandemic, and thousands of layoffs at parent company Xbox, the project carries profound weight for both nostalgic fans and the platform holder that originally shuttered its creator. Reflecting on this prolonged development cycle, Fulton maintains confidence in the title’s cultural relevance. “I genuinely think Fable is an important game. What has protected us over a long development cycle is that so many people within Xbox view Fable as vital to the DNA of the platform,” Fulton concludes. “I would go a step further and say it’s important to video games as a whole. It offers a combination of elements that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else.”
