Georgia is threatened with destruction if it agrees to join NATO on the basis of rejection of claims on Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This was stated by the leader of the opposition party “United Georgia – movement for freedom” Nino Burjanadze on the TV channel Pirveli, reports EADaily.
The politician pointed out that Russian military bases are already standing on the territory of the republics. When Tbilisi joins NATO, American military facilities will appear on the territory of Georgia, which will finally undermine the already unstable situation in the country.
“We will deploy two mutually exclusive forces on our territory. We are doing everything that all countries are avoiding – we are turning Georgia into a place of confrontation between two elephants, ”Burjanadze said and explained that by elephants she means Russia and the United States or Russia and the North Atlantic Alliance.
Thus, the Georgian opposition commented on the words of the former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who suggested that Georgia join the organization without Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The republics declared their independence in 2008 after a military conflict with the participation of Russia. Moscow supported their decision. Tbilisi still considers countries to be its occupied territories. In the same year, at the 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest, in a communique, it was recorded that sooner or later Tbilisi and Kiev would join the military bloc.
