Kevin Gausman delivered a stellar performance to shut down the Diamondbacks’ lineup on Monday night. Needing just 94 pitches to navigate through seven frames, the right-hander surrendered only three hits and one walk while collecting six strikeouts. This outing marked his most impressive appearance for Chicago since joining the club via a trade deadline acquisition from the Toronto Blue Jays, boosting his record to 2-1.
The Arizona offense struggled to generate any rhythm against the veteran starter, mustering a mere five hits on the evening—all of them singles.
Late-Inning Power Surge Breaks Open Tight Contest
Arizona right-hander Merrill Kelly kept the Cubs largely in check, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four batters across 5 2/3 innings of work. His final pitching line dropped his record to 8-12 on the season.
However, the Chicago offense manufactured early scoring before blowing the game wide open in the sixth. Immediately following that blast, Carson Kelly inflicted more damage against his former organization—having previously played 4 1/2 seasons in Arizona—by launching a solo home run to left field.
Conforto finished the night reaching base in four separate plate appearances, recording a single, a double, a home run, and drawing a walk. Both Happ and Ramírez contributed multi-hit performances with two hits apiece.
