Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer has withdrawn from the England squad for the upcoming international break due to a muscle injury and careful workload management, according to regional and sports reporting. The 24-year-old was initially recalled by England head coach Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming four Nations League fixtures following his surprising omission from the World Cup squad this summer.
Cole Palmer’s Withdrawal from England Squad and Fitness Context
Rather than linking up with the Three Lions for the three-week international window, Palmer will stay at Chelsea. The decision arrived right after he played the full 90 minutes of Chelsea’s 3-0 Premier League defeat against Brentford on Friday, as reported by club coverage. Across all competitions over seven appearances, Palmer has managed four goals and two assists, launching his campaign strongly despite mixed form from Chelsea.
This withdrawal highlights ongoing fitness difficulties that disrupted his 2025-26 campaign, when injuries limited his availability. Prior to the campaign kicking off, Blues manager Xabi Alonso voiced confidence that those difficulties were behind Palmer, noting that following a challenging period, the midfielder had engaged in rigorous work focused on injury prevention. As a demanding calendar of domestic and European fixtures unfolds, Chelsea are adopting a prudent approach regarding one of their most pivotal players. Having made 14 senior international appearances and scored twice, Palmer’s last outing for the Three Lions came against Japan in March.
Reflecting on his physical struggles last season, Palmer told Sky Sports: Physically I feel good, probably the best I’ve felt in ages, but I think I can [get fitter] with games and more minutes.
He added regarding his past dilemma: Before my groin injury, I’d never really been injured. Well, rarely [injured]. So then I would just come back and play when I shouldn’t have played. Obviously the World Cup was coming up, so I was in a bit of a dilemma thinking: ‘if I don’t play I’m not going to go. But if I play then, I can’t play [properly]’. It was just a bit of a sticky situation. I didn’t really know how to deal with it, but it’s one of those things. I was just seeing different people, getting different ideas of why I was injured and what it was. Since I’ve come back I’ve been working every day to obviously stop it happening again. I just want to stay injury free, and if I’m on the pitch then I know what I can do.
Thomas Tuchel’s Squad Selection and Replacement Plans
With the England manager having provided the midfielder a chance to work his way back into his plans, Tuchel now faces a setback due to Palmer’s unavailability. According to Sky Sports News, Morgan Gibbs-White will be called up as Palmer’s replacement. Discussing his squad selections last week, Tuchel explained his rationale regarding returning players:
“We can see the form Morgan is in and he ended the season very strongly and was the key player for Forest to not be relegated. We can see him stepping up now,”
Tuchel also addressed Palmer’s previous omission and the path forward:
“Cole needs to show these kinds of numbers and performances to get his shirt and justify the nomination.”
Addressing why Palmer did not feature during the World Cup, Tuchel admitted fault in team management: I expect him to be on the pitch and it’s my duty to get him on the pitch. That was totally on me. He didn’t put a foot wrong during the World Cup. He was class in behaviour on the training pitch. There was big competition; we played Reece [James] in central midf[ield].
Manchester United Fitness Concerns Impacting the Camp
Alongside Palmer, Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are additional fitness concerns ahead of the international camp. Following his substitution during United’s Premier League fixture against Fulham, Rashford is currently being evaluated, and Michael Carrick confirmed that the forward had run into a physical problem. According to Sky Sports, Rashford has been managing a hip injury since the summer’s World Cup and is unlikely to join up with the England team.

Mainoo is another potential absentee despite playing 80 minutes at Craven Cottage. While Carrick indicated Mainoo was replaced due to tactical reasons, injury is expected to rule the midfielder out of England duty. This comes even though the 24-year-old was part of the World Cup squad in the summer, though he did not play a single minute—something Tuchel had promised would change during this international break.
Upcoming Nations League Schedule
On September 26, Wembley will host England’s opening Nations League match in a major clash against reigning world champions Spain, ahead of a trip to Prague three days later to play Czechia. Three days after concluding the extended international window with a home rematch against Czechia at Wembley, Tuchel’s squad will travel to play Croatia on October 3. Rather than playing, Palmer will dedicate the break to fitness management, with Chelsea aiming to prevent last season’s recurring injuries from flaring up during another grueling season.
