Since the 1st January 2018, the advertising for all alcoholic beverages is prohibited in Lithuania. It is worth including for the journals published abroad, where such prohibition does not exist – and sold in Lithuania. Result : pages torn out, redacted, and red stickers pasted on photos of bottles of alcohol in magazines. The outrage is the measure of the number of employees assigned to this task. the “It is a practical issue of the dark times of the Middle Ages”, is the same insurgent the president of the country Dalia Grybauskaite, who does not belong to the government majority.
To the daily Vilnius Lietuvos Zinios, “no one is immune to the laws are stupid, and the distributors do their utmost to get out of this situation”. But beyond the absurdity, the concern in this country of the ex-soviet bloc : “The pages torn out or pasted require to remember that that is censorship.”
The ban on advertising is not the only measure adopted to curb the consumption of alcohol in Lithuania. It is now reserved for more than 20 years.
Even with a reduction in consumption, Lithuania remains, with 13.2 litres of pure alcohol per year and per person of more than 15 years in 2016, one of the largest consumers of alcohol in the world. The consequences of alcoholism are painful for the country, and curb this phenomenon was one of the campaign promises of the Union of greens and farmers, in power since a year ago in this baltic country.
