A Basque program teaches teachers to detect bullying through gestures

There are no magic remedies against bullying, but experts agree that prevention in the best recipe to prevent bullying. In this light, a multidisciplinary team of Basque experts, composed of criminologists, psychologists and social educators, has developed a “pioneer” system of educational intervention to prevent and identify conflicts between equals before they break out, based on the gestural language and identifying emotions in children.

in recent years there have been many steps to tackle bullying, but there is still a long way to go. In Euskadi, complaints of alleged bullying have doubled in four years to go from the 121 registered in 2010-2011 to 268 in 2014-2015, an evolution that is explained by the greater social awareness against this scourge. Indeed, confirmed cases after appropriate investigations carried out have remained virtually the same levels; in particular, the past year was 67 compared with 60 five years ago.

The Basque Government and the schools themselves are acting in a while via protocols to prevent cases of ‘thuggery’ that, in view of the data prove insufficient. In this sense, the PECI program (Pre-intervention emotional conflicts among peers) that Friday will be presented to the educational community at the headquarters of Innobasque, in the technological park of Zamudio, approaches the problem from a different perspective.

Teachers, parents and students of colleges and institutes are the recipients of this initiative, developed by responsible Detects Group agency criminological services specializing in detection of deception, and Poziktiva psychological cabinet, who have worked for more than a year development. As detailed in Juan Angel Anta, Detects Group, the program is “novel” because unlike the usual protocols, which are activated when there is a case of harassment in the classroom, the PECI is to train teachers and parents in “the detection and identification of emotions considering facial expression and body movements “with the aim of prevention. “While in classical protocols are activated when there is a conflict in the classroom and work with what the child says, our program is based on the application of emotional intelligence to address the problem before it arises.”

emotional inconsistencies

“We tell the child or not, it is interpreted through signs sensations you are feeling emotional and identify inconsistencies. For example, when a child says he is well integrated in the group, however, his expression says the opposite, “desgrana Anta.

More social awareness

the allegations in the Basque Country by ‘bullying’se have doubled in four courses

the program also includes a software later teachers can teach students of different ages to recognize the feelings. “In this way we will make children more empathetic, because that is the key to preventing harassment.” After receiving specific training, participants “learn to recognize the different expressions of emotions, as signs of future conduct. With only 10 hours of training is possible to identify 80% of the emotions, “added the expert. Those interested in the program may expand PECI information on the seminar-presentation on Friday. Attendance is free after registration on the website of Emotional Intelligence Consortium.
